Botox
Dynamic wrinkle reduction with Botox Cosmetic is one of the most popular anti-aging treatments available today. Botox injections are used to correct wrinkles on the face and neck, as well as lift sagging eyebrows and treat excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis, in millions of patients each year.
Botox Indications
Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved to temporarily correct horizontal forehead creases and frown lines (also known as 11’s) in men and women aged 18 to 65 years. It is sometimes used off-label to temporarily correct:
-Crow’s feet, or eye wrinkles
-Bunny lines, or nose wrinkles
-Platysmal bands, or neck bands
-Smoker’s lines, or mouth wrinkles
Physicians also commonly use Botox injections to reduce excessive sweating in body areas such as the underarms, hands and feet.
Botox Treatment
Like Dysport, Botox targets dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that appear after muscle movement. These wrinkles typically fade when muscle movement (a smile or frown) stops, but over time the dynamic wrinkles can become static wrinkles that are permanently visible.
To reduce dynamic wrinkles and slow the rate at which static wrinkles develop, Botox uses a neurotoxin (onabotulinumtoxinA) to temporarily paralyze hyperactive muscles that control facial expression. As Botox breaks down, the effects wear off after about three to six months, and repeat Botox injections are necessary to maintain results.
Botox injections are quick and relatively painless, so anesthesia is typically not necessary. Botox is measured in units, and anywhere from five to 30 units may be injected in different treatment areas. Botox injections are often combined with injectable fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane to provide more comprehensive facial rejuvenation.
Botox Recovery
There is no downtime after Botox. Slight redness or swelling may be present for a few hours after treatment. If bruising occurs, it may take a couple of weeks to fully resolve. Avoiding NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve, et al., can help prevent bruising.
Do not touch or rub the treated area, lie flat on your back, bend at the waist or participate in vigorous exercise for the remainder of the day after your treatment to avoid other unwanted migration of the Botox. Following post-procedure instructions and having Botox administered by an experienced injector will help you avoid side effects in general.
Initial Botox results are usually apparent within 5 days, but in some cases it takes as long as two weeks to see the full effects of your Botox treatment.

Dysport
Dysport is an FDA-approved wrinkle-relaxing injectable similar to Botox that uses a neurotoxin (abobotulinumtoxinA) to temporarily reduce dynamic wrinkles, or wrinkles that occur to muscle movement.
Dysport Indications
In addition to treating forehead lines and glabellar lines, better known as eyebrow furrows or 11’s, in patients 18-65, Dysport may also be used to correct wrinkles:
-Around the eyes (crow’s feet)
-On the bridge of the nose (bunny lines)
-On the upper lip (smoker’s lines)
Dysport may also be used to correct platysmal bands, or wrinkles that occur in the neck.
Dysport can safely and effectively treat dynamic wrinkles and help stave off static or permanent wrinkles in both men and women, however men may require a greater quantity of Dysport, which is measured in units.
Dysport Treatment
Dysport injections can be administered quickly and are virtually painfree. The product does disperse after it is injected, so it is extremely important that Dysport is injected with precision and care, especially around the eye area.
On average, patients require approximately 50-60 units of Dysport per treatment area for effective wrinkle reduction, as opposed to 20-30 units of Botox per treatment area. Despite this difference, the actual volume of product injected is about the same, so the cost of Dysport treatment is roughly the same as the cost of Botox treatment.
All wrinkle correction with Dysport is temporary and lasts a maximum of three to six months, however treatments can be repeated as soon as the effects have faded.
Dysport Recovery
There is no downtime or recovery period needed after Dysport treatment, and you may return to work and normal daily activities immediately. Redness and swelling at the injection site may occur, however this will typically resolve within a few hours.
Avoiding NSAIDs before and immediately after Dysport treatment will help you avoid bruising, but should bruising occur, it will resolve completely within a few weeks depending on how quickly your body heals.
Additionally, rubbing the injection site, participating in vigorous exercise and any movement that causes blood to rush to the head should be avoided for the remainder of the day following your Dysport treatment.
Dysport results are initially visible within a few days following treatment, however it may take one to two weeks to see the full effects of your Dysport injections.

Radiesse
In the hands of an experienced dermatologist or plastic surgeon, Radiesse is a safe, easy to use, predictable, and reliable product for facial soft tissue augmentation. This injectable filler is composed of microspheres of CaHA suspended in a matrix composed of water, glycerin, and sodium carboxy-methylcellulose. CaHA is a mineral found in bones and teeth.
Radiesse is very useful for restoring or creating mild to moderate changes in soft tissue contour, and it’s an excellent product for treating conditions like the following:
-Nasolabial folds (“smile lines”)
-Marionette lines
-Chin-lip creases
Is Radiesse treatment painful?
Radiesse volumizing filler is FDA approved for lidocaine mixing to significantly reduce the pain of injection.
After Radiesse Injection
You will be discharged immediately with simple instructions for post treatment care. “‘Touch-up”’ injections can be administered on a case-by-case basis as needed. With many patients, the results can last as long as 2 years.

Juvederm
Juvederm injectable gel, which is available in Ultra and Ultra Plus formulations, is an injectable filler made of hyaluronic acid and FDA-approved to temporarily correct facial folds and creases. Juvederm XC, a Juvederm filler formulation that contains lidocaine for pain relief, is also now available.
Juvederm Indications
Juvederm treatment is suitable for both male and female patients of all skin types and ages 18 and older.
In addition to correcting facial creases, such as the nasolabial folds (nose to mouth creases) and marionette lines (mouth to chin creases), smoker’s lines (upper lip wrinkles), and deep frown lines (11’s), Juvederm is also used for the following:
-Lip augmentation
-Non-surgical nose contouring
-Acne scar correction
-Filling under eye depressions
Juvederm is also sometimes injected into the backs of the hands to restore volume and improve the appearance of veiny, withered hands.
Juvederm Treatment
Juvederm injections are quick and easy, especially now that Juvederm XC is available and comes premixed with lidocaine anesthetic.
1 – 2 syringes of Juvederm are typically used during each treatment, depending on the number of areas you wish to treat. The effects of Juvederm are temporary and may last anywhere from 6 months to 1 year. Because Juvederm injections typically last a bit longer than comparable Restylane injections, the cost of Juvederm may be slightly higher per syringe.
After Juvederm Injection
Swelling after Juvederm typically peaks about two days after injection, then gradually decreases over the next few days, along with any bruising and injection site redness that has occurred. Icing the treated area helps reduce swelling and avoiding NSAIDs (e.g. Advil, Aleve, aspirin) will help you prevent bruising.
Poor injection technique can lead to other complications, such as development of lumps, a bluish skin tint called the Tyndall Effect and puffiness due to over-injection. The success of Juvederm injections is very technique dependent, so it is important to seek treatment with an experienced Juvederm injector.
Although the effect of your Juvederm injections will be immediately visible after treatment, the final results will not be apparent until all swelling has subsided and the product has settled about two weeks after treatment.
